The ‘antifa super-soldier’ conspiracy theory is dangerous because people want to believe it

The Verge

On November 4th, an activist group called Refuse Fascism says it will hold rallies in 20 cities, aiming to remove Donald Trump and Mike Pence from office through persistent mass protest. Refuse Fascism compares its project to last year’s South Korean protests against President Park Geun-hye, which ended with Park’s impeachment in March. It’s aiming to start with “at least several thousand people” in the rallies, and continue with semi-permanent encampments.

Google serves employees a real version of Android's burger emoji with cheese below the patty

The Verge

Today, a Google office in Seattle served its employees something called an "Android burger." The key difference between this burger and any other is that the slice of cheese is placed beneath the beef patty and atop the lower bun. It looks exactly like Android's burger emoji, which sparked heated controversy earlier this week over the correct ingredient order of America’s beloved staple.

Apple has to teach people how to use an iPhone again

The Verge

Remember those introduction videos that Apple made to help people familiarize themselves with the original iPhone? In 2007, the company’s goal was to get users comfortable with interacting with a big (at the time) touchscreen and showing them slide to unlock. It’s been a long time since Apple has had any need to teach consumers how to use the iPhone again, but the removal of the home button and debut of Face ID are definitely big enough changes to warrant some new lessons.

Broadcom may acquire Qualcomm amid existential legal battle with Apple

The Verge

Prominent Apple supplier and component maker Broadcom is considering an acquisition of fellow chipmaker Qualcomm for more than $100 billion, in what would be the largest-ever acquisition in the chip business. The news, reported by Bloomberg today, would value Qualcomm shares at around $70, and investors immediately responded enthusiastically by sending Qualcomm stock up nearly 14 percent in what Bloomberg says is the largest stock movement for the company in nearly a decade.

The Verge

A number of iPhone X owners on Twitter have reported having issues activating their new phones. The issue seems to be affecting some AT&T and Verizon users in the last few hours as they try to get service on Apple’s $1,000 phone. When users try to activate the device, a message pops up saying, “The activation server is temporarily unavailable.”

Trump's account was deactivated after years of employees warning Twitter

The Verge

Last night, a rogue Twitter employee celebrated their last day with the company by deactivating President Donald Trump’s account. In response, Twitter said it has “implemented safeguards to prevent this from happening again.” But the company declined to offer any explanation for how it would restrict access to tools that have been accessible to a range of Twitter employees, including contractors. Former employees say the company has known about the risks of rogue employees for years — and that... Читать дальше...

Overwatch is getting a mad scientist hero and a Blizzard theme park map

The Verge

At BlizzCon today, Blizzard unveiled two big new updates coming to its hero shooter Overwatch. To start, the game will be getting a new character: a mad scientist-type support hero called Moira. There’s no word yet on when she’ll be available to players in the game, but she joins an ever-growing cast that most recently added Doomfist in the summer. You can find out more details about Moira on the Overwatch site.

Animoji karaoke almost justifies the iPhone X’s creepiest feature

The Verge

Among the many normal new features of the iPhone X is the addition of Animoji — all your favorite emoji, but synced up to reenact facial movements like a Snapchat filter on steroids. It’s hard for me to fathom why anyone would want to use these terrifying things. Or, it was until FastCompany tech editor Harry McCracken introduced my Twitter timeline to “Animoji Karaoke.”

The ‘4D’ version of Thor: Ragnarok might be better than the real thing

The Verge

What is the future of film? A skit from The Late Late Show with James Corden imagines a bold new world in which moviegoers can watch Thor: Ragnarok as a cutting-edge form of cinema: “4D,” which Corden describes as “action literally leaping off the screen. What that means in practice is a low-budget stage play, performed in the movie theater by actors in phenomenally cheap costumes and uncooperative wigs.

Thor: Ragnarok thinks superheroes are ridiculous, and that makes it wonderful

The Verge

Over the years, Marvel has earned a reputation for perhaps not being the most director-friendly studio in the industry. Edgar Wright left Ant-Man after eight years on the project, due to differences in vision. Joss Whedon walked away from the Avengers franchise after finding the creative compromises on Age of Ultron too difficult. And Patty Jenkins left Thor: The Dark World for similar reasons — and then went on to direct Wonder Woman. Along the way, filmmakers like Ava DuVernay have been invited to direct Marvel movies... Logitech made a VR keyboard kit so you can type in the Vive

The Verge

Logitech is making a virtual reality accessory kit that lets you see its keyboards inside VR, called Logitech Bridge. The Bridge system works with HTC’s Vive VR headset, using a Vive tracking disk, a Logitech G gaming keyboard, and an accessory that connects the two. Once you’ve hooked the tracker to the keyboard, Logitech software positions a 3D virtual keyboard model precisely over the real one. It’s a pretty clever idea, although right now, it’s only going out to 50 developers as a proof of concept. Читать дальше...

Facebook rolls out GIF-supported polls feature to web and mobile apps

The Verge

If you’ve ever wanted to ask your Facebook friends really important questions, like “should I have chicken nuggets, or actually cook adult food for dinner?” now you can in poll form. Today, Facebook has rolled out a GIF-supported poll feature that allows users to post votable questions as a new status on both the web and iOS and Android apps. You will also be able to add GIFs and photos as responses, too, instead of just plain old boring text.

Stranger Things 1 was made for me, but Stranger Things 2 was made for Eggo

The Verge

In 2016, Stranger Things seemed to arrive practically out of nowhere. Netflix released a surprise trailer on June 9th, highlighting the show’s combination of Stephen King horror and Spielberg-esque wonder; barely a month later, the series was streaming across the globe. It almost immediately became a viral sensation, earning a place in the broader pop culture conversation, and by the end of August, a second season was already in the works.

What the hell is wrong with Hopper in Stranger Things season 2?

The Verge

In horror movies, it’s often necessary for institutions to fail. To make the audience scared, the characters have to be scared, which means they can’t just casually whistle up the authorities to take care of the roving maniac, the giant monster, or whatever else is on the loose. In both seasons of Netflix’s Stranger Things, it’s important that the government is a vaguely inimical, vaguely incompetent organization that permits cruel experiments with bad results, then lets the invasion of our world by the Upside Down get out of hand. How to fast charge your iPhone X

The Verge

Your brand new $1,000 iPhone X comes with a charger in the box, but it’s not very good. According to Apple, the iPhone X (and the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus) actually support fast charging to the level of restoring up to 50 percent charge in 30 minutes. Unfortunately, it’ll be a bit pricey if you want to get those speeds, since Apple doesn’t include any of the things you’ll need in the box.
