Nintendo reportedly doubles Switch production again

The Verge

Nintendo is going to ramp up Switch console production even more next year, anonymous sources told the Wall Street Journal. The company reportedly plans to produce 25 to 30 million Nintendo Switch consoles starting in April, but the final number could be even higher depending on holiday sales. Incredibly strong reviews for Super Mario Odyssey have sparked another surge in demand for the take-anywhere console.

East Coasters might be able to spot Orbital ATK’s rocket launch this weekend

The Verge

Tomorrow morning, private spaceflight company Orbital ATK will get back to resupplying the International Space Station for NASA, sending up 7,400 pounds of supplies inside its Cygnus cargo capsule. And for this launch, the company is using its own rocket, the Antares, which hasn’t seen any action since last year. Who are Spotify’s terrible ‘gamer’ playlists actually for?

The Verge

Spotify’s curated playlists try to offer a little something for everyone. Are you looking for music that will help you sleep, run, or wallow in your own misery? There’s a Spotify-created playlist for that. So it’s not surprising that the service would suggest some music for people to turn on while they’re playing video games — but it is shocking just how bad those playlists are, and how hard they turn into the most boring, outdated cliches of what people who play video games like — or are like.

Omni magazine is officially back in print

The Verge

Beloved science fiction magazine Omni is rebooting from its reboot. The new, quarterly edition of Omni has quietly launched, after being announced over the summer. It’s the first new print issue since the 1990s, and the second attempt to revive the Omni name, after a confusing legal fight over an unrelated predecessor called Omni Reboot. Like the original Omni, it publishes a mix of fiction and nonfiction futurism: the first issue includes coverage of a space ark project and stories from Nancy Kress, Maureen McHugh, and Rich Larson. Thelma is a superhero horror movie about the terror of growing up

The Verge

There’s a proud tradition in genre films of using the supernatural as a metaphor for the horrors of adolescence. Traversing that strange no-man’s-land between childhood and adulthood is a real-world horror show in its own right, full of strange discoveries, odd awakenings, and the slow, dawning realization that our childhood identities may not be our final identities. There’s an inevitable loss of control plus the terror of the unknown wrapped up together. This is an almost irresistible target... Читать дальше...

How Snipperclips went from tiny indie game to Nintendo Switch launch title

The Verge

In the summer of 2015, brothers Adam and Tom Vian spent eight hours building a prototype game about two cute pieces of paper who could snip each other into different shapes in order to solve puzzles. They called it Friendshapes. Two years later, the game — under the new moniker Snipperclips — was one of just a handful of Nintendo-published titles available at the launch of the Switch, alongside the likes of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

The Verge

Google’s Pixel 2 and 2 XL have had a handful of annoying bugs and flaws since launch, and now there seems to be another one preventing the Google Assistant from being used over Bluetooth headphones. Dozens of people have reported the problem on Google’s support forum, and we’ve experienced it as well. It appears to be happening across many different brands of headphones. The problem has been going on since October, but Android Police just called attention to it.

It’s time to stop trusting Google search already

The Verge

Last weekend, in the hours after a deadly Texas church shooting, Google search promoted false reports about the suspect, suggesting that he was a radical communist affiliated with the antifa movement. The claims popped up in Google’s “Popular on Twitter” module, which made them prominently visible — although not the top results — in a search for the alleged killer’s name. Of course, the was just the latest instance of a long-standing problem: it was the latest of multiple similar missteps. As usual... Читать дальше...

Buying USB-C earbuds for my Pixel 2 was incredibly annoying and expensive

The Verge

When I upgraded from my Nexus 5X to a Pixel 2, I didn’t worry about living the headphone #donglelife. I figured I would just replace my current headphones with a cheap USB-C pair, because I usually buy my earbuds from airport kiosks for $20 or less. I had ruled out Bluetooth earbuds, because I loathe the idea of charging yet another gadget, and I tend to lose things. I thought finding earbuds for Google’s flagship phone would be easy. I thought wrong.

The study, first reported by Ars Technica, breaks down the numbers for NASA’s investments in various commercial spacecraft over the last decade, to give an “apples to apples” comparison of costs.

Tech companies are cheering on a bill that guts internet protections

The Verge

Yesterday, the biggest US internet bill in years cleared a major hurdle on the path to becoming law. In a unanimous vote, the Senate Commerce Committee approved the Stop Enabling Sex Trafficking Act (or SESTA), clearing the way for a full vote by the House and Senate. As Congress wrestles over tax reform and the debt ceiling, it’s still unclear when SESTA will reach a larger vote, and it still faces stern opposition from tech policy organizations and even some anti-trafficking groups. But with more than 30 senators already signed on... Читать дальше...

Twitter bumps display name length up to 50 characters

The Verge

If you have a super long name or just want more room for all your seasonal-themed display names, Twitter now lets you use up to 50 characters in your name, up from the original 20. The new length means you can also add more emoji without hitting the limit. Many users embraced the change, though some also questioned why Twitter was adding somewhat gimmicky features when it could be working on tackling its more serious issues on the platform (particularly as it’s facing backlash for verifying Jason Kessler...
