James Harden on his relationship with Daryl Morey: 'I looked at it like a marriage'

0

You probably had the most unique player-front office relationship… James Harden: Ever. Yeah, maybe in the history of the game. James Harden: Yeah. It surprised the hell out of me, you know what I mean? I looked at it like a marriage. We talked about a lot of s—. And we’ve got a lot of s— that, in front of people’s eyes, you don’t know or understand. But instead of (Morey) having a conversation with me (about free agency) or saying, ‘All right James, we don’t want to offer you this, but we have this.’ Then we go back and forth, and that’s a dialogue. But you just ice me out? Then it’s like, you don’t respect me as much as I thought you did. You don’t need people like that, you know what I mean? So it’s just bad karma. People were throwing dirt on my name, but the good guys always win.

Nuggets fans haven’t seen it yet, but the James Harden trade has been just fine for the LA Clippers.
@RichHomieFlom explains that it’s everything else that needs fixing, including Russell Westbrook.

James Harden during the past decade has almost always played the majority of 1Q minutes. Today he played 5 1Q min. and came back with largely reserves in 2Q, and Lue said it was to help “James be James.” Lue felt Harden was more comfortable. Praised way he got into the paint. – 6:49 PM

Clippers get the stop, then don’t call a timeout down 2 even with Harden on the bench. Paul George brings it up and sinks the three for a 113-112 lead with 8.9 seconds left. – 6:29 PM

In the third quarter, James Harden has scored 13 points and created 10 more points off of his assists as the Clippers have taken Golden State’s 22-point lead down to 9. – 5:41 PM

James Harden has averaged about 2.3 shots per game within 10 feet of the rim as a Clipper. Today he’s taken 3 attempts at or near the rim in only his first 9 minutes. Fairly big shift to see him finishing downhill this often. – 4:46 PM

First quarter: Warriors 33, Clippers 22
It featured a change to Lue’s substitution pattern by bringing Harden out first after 5 min. instead of having him play his usual full first quarter. Curious if we’ll see Harden paired with reserves, perhaps as strategy to get him going. – 4:36 PM

If you recall, Harden was ejected from Game 3 vs the Nets last season for what the officials believed was an intentional hit below the belt to create space.
Idk if the crew is the same but that hit from Brown looked intentional. Don’t know how you justify that ruling. – 9:18 PM

More on this storyline

Then when did you start figuring out that it wouldn’t be there? I’d heard that he stopped communicating with you in the summertime, and you took that as a sign that things had changed. James Harden: Yeah, me and Daryl had a really good relationship. So (in the past), a week or two after we lose in the playoffs, it would be all about trying to figure out how to improve the team. (They’d talk about) ‘How do we get better?’ And that’s been going on for 10-plus years, you know what I mean? And then this year, there was no communication. And at that point, it’s like, ‘OK, I see what’s going on.’ I’m very intelligent. So then I just figure out ‘What’s my next move, and what do I want to do?’ So I understand that, at the end of the day, this is a business. And just like he has to do what’s best for his organization, I’ve got to do what’s best for me and my family. It’s as simple as that. -via The Athletic / December 4, 2023
But timing-wise, when did Daryl tell you that you’d be getting the max? James Harden: Well, the time that’s important was before the playoffs started (last season). He had conversations with my representation. – Sam Amick: When reached about Harden’s claim, a Sixers team source denied this was the case.  -via The Athletic / December 4, 2023
So what are your big-picture thoughts so far with this (Clippers) group? What do you like? What do you not like? What’s the vibe? James Harden: It’s hard to tell overall, but I think this is just a really good situation for me in the sense of having an opportunity to win, being around family and just having an opportunity to still chase my goals and things that I want to accomplish basketball-wise. -via The Athletic / December 4, 2023
