LeBron James becomes first player to top 40 points in his 21st season

0

LeBron James, one week shy of his 39th birthday, became the first player to top 40 points in his 21st season. “We needed this win,” James said. “We didn’t want to end the road trip in a losing effort. … To come in here to play versus a team that’s been playing extremely well throughout this season, it was a big win for us.” The Thunder, owners of the No. 3 record in the Western Conference, were thwarted by the Lakers’ new-look starting lineup that replaced point guard D’Angelo Russell with forward Jarred Vanderbilt — giving L.A. a big, switchable front line to apply pressure on defense.

New story: “We needed this win,” LeBron James said. On a good night for a reeling Lakers team, as L.A. once again showed it has another gear it can reach when it puts its mind to it es.pn/3TBTqlS1:48 AM

LeBron James, while being asked about scoring 40 a week shy of his 39th birthday, had teammates chirp in the background:
Anthony Davis: “He had 40?!”

Impressive that Lakers won in Oklahoma City
But now the questions shift to how sustainable Point Bron is (37 minutes, while Russell shaved down to 17 minutes), and of course 42 minutes of Anthony Davis in a game Lakers led entire second half by at least 8 points – 11:00 PM

26-straight is hard to wrap your head around. Especially *this* team, *this* deep into a rebuild.
The 2010-11 Cavs had just lost LeBron. The 2013-14 Sixers were intentionally bad. They’re absolutely no good explanation for this Pistons team joining them. It’s just a disaster. – 10:39 PM
Brandon Rahbar @BrandonRahbar
Good fight from OKC but the comeback falls short.
Tough to beat a LeBron/Curry hybrid. James hit 5-5 from 3. Lakers were 16-32.
Lots of good looks/misses from OKC from deep.
Thunder split the LA homestand.
Next up: Wolves in OKC the day after Christmas. – 10:34 PM

Putting LeBron at the point means the ball is in the hands of your best player on every possession. The Lakers got the right shot on almost every possession tonight and that’s not a coincidence – 10:24 PM

LeBron James has his first 40-point game of the season and LAL is going to back up Anthony Davis’ “must win” directive and stop the bleeding here tonight in OKC. – 10:15 PM

A season-high from @KingJames, in Year 21, comes on yet another 3, his 5th in 5 attempts, to reach 40 points on just 19 shots.

We often focus on the Lakers winning (or losing) the minutes without LeBron, but they just won a long stretch without AD. And that’s pretty important, too. AK – 8:56 PM
Rylan Stiles @Rylan_Stiles
Back to back big plays by Chet Holmgren, he was aggressive off the bounce on offense for an easy lay up, and just got a nice block of LeBron James at the rim on defense. OKC needs to see him be aggressive in these non-SGA minutes especially – 8:46 PM
Jovan Buha @jovanbuha
A new second unit of Jaxson Hayes, Jarred Vanderbilt, LeBron James, Taurean Prince and D’Angelo Russell has outscored OKC 13-3 to start the second quarter. Eight points from DLo. Three assists from LeBron. This is the best LA has looked all night. – 8:44 PM

Same play on consecutive plays. AD isoed aat the elbow extended. Double comes. Reddish slides into the restricted area. LeBron dives. Fed by Reddish. Basket, then a trip to the line. Good stuff. AK – 8:27 PM
Mike Trudell @LakersReporter
Same exact action for the Lakers after OKC brought a double on AD … baseline cut from Reddish, who gets the ball from AD, then feeds LeBron, cutting from the FT line. First a layup, then 2 FT’s for LeBron as LAL go up 22-17. – 8:25 PM

The LeBron-Davis-Reaves-DLo-Vando lineup has a +20.6 net rating last season. It made perfect sense on paper. Vando is presumably healthy enough to start now. I’m truly at a loss over why THAT isn’t the lineup they’re switching to. – 1:33 PM
NBA Math @NBA_Math
Proactive answer: This is based purely on merit, as determined by the RPR MVP methodology. When popularity factors into the equation, LeBron James and Stephen Curry, in particular, might be in slightly different spots. – 12:10 PM

More on this storyline

LeBron James scored a season-high 40 points and the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 129-120 on Saturday night to snap a four-game losing streak. The 38-year-old James was 13 of 20 from the field, hitting five 3-pointers without a miss, and made all nine of his free throws. He also had seven rebounds, seven assists and two blocks. Oklahoma City trimmed what had been a 26-point deficit with 3:32 left in the third quarter to eight points midway through the fourth quarter. James then took over, scoring 11 points in the final 4:29 to help the Lakers hold on. “To know I can go out and still make game-winning plays, can affect the game in multiple ways and can still close out a game in the fourth quarter when our team needed when they started making a run is always a good feeling for sure,” James said. -via ESPN / December 24, 2023
Clutch Points: “This might be one of my favorite highlights I’ve ever had… Down two with 20 seconds left, we got the rebound and it was me and Bron… That’s a moment you live for.” Jayson Tatum reminisces on his game-tying jumper over LeBron James on Christmas Day 🪣 pic.twitter.com/5PbVJP2EAd -via Twitter @ClutchPointsApp / December 23, 2023
