Think I'm quite envious hearing about the antics of yesteryear. My first season ticket was in 1999 and the only characters I could recall were wolfy and sumo.
I didn't know wire but I know a fair few that did. The tales I've heard about him are brilliant. Shame nobody could get them published. I'd buy a copy

My memory is that it was started by a group of Minstrel Wanderers Boys who used to stand in front of the piss pot at the back of the left hand side of The Kop (as you looked at the pitch). This was roughly 1981 and they also had a little dance routine to accompany the words. The dance routine meant they were generally ignored as a bunch of loons however they persisted and after a 30 minute + version of SOTV those surrounding joined in and the rest is history.
