As you say, Chester is probably your best bet for decent work. Wrexham is quite busy too, whilst St. Asaph has the third largest optics industry in the world iirc. And Liverpool is only an hour-ish away. There are pockets of good jobs in north Wales, but most vacancies are catering or care-based. Generally though, north Wales is a bit of a desert compared to south Wales - compare the investment in the M4 to the A55!
