It's about reverse engineering the craft. It's technology no-one in earth possesses. If one nation gets it then they will be the dominant nation in the world. Hence the secrecy and hence the desire to be the only one with that power.
There's also the argument that it would eff up religion and cause mass hysteria although I think that's less likely than it was 50 years ago.
