Genndy Tartakovsky on reviving Samurai Jack: ‘I was out of shape for working this hard again’

The Verge

Writer-director Genndy Tartakovsky promises the new season of Samurai Jack is the last one. His stylish animated series, about a feudal Japanese samurai stuck in a dystopian far future launched in 2001, and ran for four seasons on Cartoon Network. But it wrapped up in 2004 with no real conclusion. Jack was still stuck far from his own time, fighting the shape-changing, world-conquering demon Aku.

ICE detainees are asking to be put in solitary confinement for their own safety

The Verge

Last week it was reported that the Trump administration is eyeing a major expansion of detention facilities for many of the immigrants Trump hopes to deport. The move underscores an often-overlooked reality of Trump’s signature campaign promise: before immigrants are actually expelled from the country, they are generally detained — sometimes for years — as they are processed or as their cases are reviewed. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) contracts out many of its detention facilities to private prison corporations like CoreCivic ... Читать дальше...

We kicked out Nilay and Dieter for this week's all-female Vergecast

The Verge

On this special episode of The Vergecast, the ladies of The Verge take over the show. Did you know that nearly half of the team is female? Seriously, we’re probably two women away from a 50 / 50 split, but you’d never know that if you only listened to The Vergecast! That’s why, in honor of International Women’s Day this week (and Women’s History Month all month!), we have Megan Farokhmanesh, Adi Robertson, Natt Garun, and Ashley Carman in the studio talking about Google’s big and enterprise-y week... Twitch is getting its own desktop app

The Verge

Game streaming platform Twitch is getting a desktop app very soon. The new app is actually a rebrand of an old one; last year Twitch acquired standalone gaming chat app Curse, which will now be reintroduced as an official Twitch product.

Asking Alexa ‘who poop?’ is a wild ride

The Verge

Digital assistants like Alexa are supposed to answer all your burning questions, giving accurate responses to important queries like “Is it raining?” and “Where is France?” But sometimes, the methods these programs use to dredge information from the web haul up some oddities. Case in point: you should really try asking Alexa “who poop?” because the answer you will get is baffling.

Verizon Wireless wades right back into the net neutrality debate with Fios deal

The Verge

Verizon is taking a page out of AT&T’s book by zero rating its Fios cable TV service for all Verizon Wireless customers. That means that if you purchase your mobile data plan from Verizon Wireless and your cable TV plan from Fios, you can now use the Fios Mobile app to stream live channels and on-demand shows and not have it count against your monthly data cap. (It should be noted that Verizon Wireless and Fios are separate subsidiaries, but both are owned by Verizon Communications.)

Show Notes: Google vs. Microsoft vs. Slack

The Verge

Before every episode of The Vergecast I sit down, read through a bunch of news, and take a bunch of notes. It’s one of the most enjoyable parts of my week, and I started thinking it might be fun to do every day on the site. So, every day this week I’m sitting down and writing some notes on the news as though I’ll be talking about it later. Are you into this? Am I into this? I don’t know. But it’s fun to do! Give me some feedback and we’ll keep mutating this into something good.

Beyond the Bechdel test: here’s how films can really make us love female characters

The Verge

Any time someone brings up the Bechdel Test in an open internet forum, you can count the seconds until someone complains that actually, it isn’t a reliable indicator of a film’s quality. Never mind that no one — including cartoonist Alison Bechdel, who accidentally created the test in a 1985 comic strip — claims a Bechdel-test pass proves a given film is feminist, well-written, or even entertaining. The test itself is just a conversation piece because it’s such a low bar (do two women in the film... Читать дальше...

Google’s Jamboard is the cutest collaborative whiteboard you’ll ever touch

The Verge

Google has finally given a price and release date for the Jamboard, the 55-inch touchscreen display it wants businesses to buy and use as a hybrid whiteboard / conferencing system. That price is pretty high at $4,999 plus a $600 annual fee, but still much cheaper than Microsoft’s similar Surface Hub system. It’s designed for whiteboarding and teleconferencing, and it’s as good a system for doing anything else that I’ve tried.
