Android Instant Apps are now available to all developers

The Verge

After a year of incubation, Android Instant Apps are finally ready for the world. Originally announced at last year's Google I/O, Instant Apps are a way for developers to offer a lightweight version of their Android app without requiring a visit to the Play Store. You just click a link in your web browser and all of a sudden you're using a real Android app, with all the power that implies — other than a few safety restrictions. A few Instant Apps were made available in January as a trial run,... Читать дальше...

The 6 big updates coming to Google Home

The Verge

Google announced a few big updates for the Google Home today. None of them are game-changing on their own, but they all add up to a substantial update for the connected speaker. Details are pretty basic right now, and Google didn’t say when any of these features would arrive, but here’s the gist of what’s coming up for the Home.

Apple Music is moving away from album exclusives

The Verge

Apple Music is cutting back on one of its defining characteristics: album exclusives. In a recent interview with Music Business Worldwide, Apple exec Jimmy Iovine said that the streaming service plans to be less aggressive about obtaining exclusives in the future. “We tried it,” he said. “We’ll still do some stuff with the occasional artist. The labels don’t seem to like it and ultimately it’s their content.”

Google’s app for lost Android phones is now called Find My Device

The Verge

Google is overhauling its Android Device Manager app, which is basically Android’s equivalent of Apple’s “Find My iPhone.” Now the two are much closer in name. As reported by Android Police, Google is in the process of rolling out a big update to the device-tracking software — and it’s getting a new, much more sensible name: Find My Device. You can expect to hear more about the update minutes from now during the I/O 2017 presentation, but the redesigned app is already live in the Play Store.

Logan Noir is a sweet, silly attempt to drag out Hugh Jackman’s goodbye

The Verge

The one-night-only theatrical release of a new black-and-white cut of Logan was announced just three weeks in advance, with director James Mangold boasting a “sumptuous” experience for hardcore fans, and theaters announcing a black-and-white dress code for attendees. Brooklyn’s Alamo Drafthouse went so far as to post a disclaimer saying that moviegoers were “required” to wear black and white and the dress code would be “strictly enforced.”

Amazon lights a Fire to get Alexa inside your pocket

The Verge

I bought an Amazon Echo Dot on Black Friday as an experiment. I'm now this close from going all-in on an Alexa-based smart home. An Echo Show for the Kitchen, a few Dots for the kids' rooms and office, and maybe that lovely C lamp for the bedroom. It won't be cheap which is why I've been reluctant to commit. But now I have to rethink things after yesterday's announcement of the HTC U11 — the first smartphone with hands-free support for Alexa.

There’s a good reason Shazam started forgetting song titles in April

The Verge

In April 2017, people using the music-recognition app Shazam might have noticed the app behaving a little oddly. Usually the mobile app identifies songs by comparing sound input to the sound records in an online database. But last month, users in the UK saw the app experiencing a little hiccup as it tried to spit out song names, Adweek reports. It was as if Shazam just couldn’t remember.
