With us coming close to the 2022-23 trade deadline, we decided to look back through history at the best player acquisitions that took place in the week leading up to that big day in the NBA calendar.

Rekindling an old relationship can be a rewarding move, and it appears that desire may be showing itself with the NBA‘s trade deadline a week away. A source close to the Heat tells Heavy Sports the club is interested in a reunion with Kelly Olynyk — and that Miami isn’t his only suitor. The Celtics are also said to be looking at the possibility of re-acquiring the 6-11 floor-spacing big man, who spent his first four NBA seasons in Boston.

Contrary to reports and perhaps the court of public opinion, Coby White does have trade value, with league sources saying the Bulls have rejected overtures from rival clubs. Whether that says more about the Bulls’ belief in White or concern with Ball remains a mystery. But with his shooting and improved play, White no longer is merely a trade chip the Bulls can use to tidy their backcourt. Could the way he’s developed this season make the Bulls rethink his future? It’s also a big contract year for you. What have you thought about your future? Austin Reaves: I don’t really think that far ahead. I’m just trying to win games. I love being in Los Angeles, and I love being a Laker. Kobe Bryant was my favorite player growing up, so getting an opportunity to play for the Lakers is a big blessing.

What went through your mind going undrafted on the journey to make your NBA dream a reality? Austin Reaves: I was pissed, to be honest. Obviously, I didn’t feel like there were 60 better players, but the draft’s not all about talent at that moment. It’s about potential and stuff like that, probably after 25 (pick). I wasn’t happy, but I knew I was going to have an opportunity, and that was all it was going to take, someone giving me an opportunity to go prove myself.

After going undrafted in 2021, Austin Reaves agreed to a two-way contract on draft night with the Lakers, played well enough to be converted to a standard NBA contract after training camp, and has since earned a larger role this season to position himself for a pay raise in free agency this summer.

A similar line of thinking informs the discussion around VanVleet, although his on-court value and his status as a culture setter going back to the Raptors championship season makes his case different. The belief is that VanVleet wants to remain a Raptor, though fit and familiarity aside, money is a factor there too. “The worst thing that could happen to Fred is to be traded,” said one league insider. “Unless you’re a superstar who is getting the max no matter what, the best way to get paid is by staying with your own team.”

The Minnesota Timberwolves have certainly not ruled out trading D’Angelo Russell, but he has played well in December and January. “He has been a good offensive player for them,” said Zach Lowe on his podcast. “That noise, to me, has kind of quieted. I know there are deals out there that they would do. I don’t think any teams have met those deal points yet.”

More and more, as the deadline draws near, I hear rival teams saying that they believe Detroit is poised to rebuff all trade inquiries for Bojan Bogdanovic. I was certainly among those who thought it was posturing when Detroit’s reluctance to trade Bogdanovic began to surface many weeks ago, but one league source went so far as asserting this week that the Pistons would refuse to surrender Bogdanovic even if offered that fully unprotected future first-round pick that everyone says Detroit covets. But league sources say the Hawks have no shortage of trade interest in Bogdan Bogdanovic as well — as in “half the league is calling” type stuff. The 30-year-old guard has a player option for $18 million next season, so most teams would understandably view him as a short-term rental (with the hopes of re-signing him if he opts out). To this point, the Hawks haven’t shown much interest in moving him.

James Ham: All-Star No. 2? There is growing optimism in NBA circles that De’Aaron Fox will also have his name called when All-Stars reserves are announced on Thursday. He put up big numbers once again in this one, scoring 31 points to go with 10 assists and 3 steals.
