According to a source with knowledge of the Lakers’ discussions with Brooklyn [for Kyrie Irving], a significant obstacle emerged in the early stages of the talks between the Lakers and the Nets. The source, who was granted anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation, said the Lakers were only looking to give the Nets the kind of return they’re requesting if Irving was willing to accept the two-year, $78.6 million extension they could immediately agree on as part of the deal.

Secondly, I’ve been told that the Spurs have players who the Nets would value in a multi-team trade involving Irving. According to an insider, the Nets have specifically told teams they’d be most interested in Josh Richardson and Zach Collins from the Spurs. Collins hasn’t previously been included in many trade talks but I’ve been told that the Spurs would be open to trading him in the right deal.

Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry left the Warriors’ 119-113 victory over the Dallas Mavericks at the end of the third quarter after suffering an apparent left knee injury. Curry immediately received an X-ray, which came back negative, the team announced. He will get an MRI next. Curry sustained the injury with 2:01 left in the third quarter after his left knee collided with Dallas’ McKinley Wright IV’s knee while Curry was defending him.

Irving has not given the Nets a list of preferred destinations, but there’s strong mutual interest between him and the Lakers that goes back to the summer. The Los Angeles Lakers, Dallas Mavericks and Phoenix Suns — among others — have been engaging with the Nets since Irving’s trade demand on Friday, sources said. And now the Clippers – who’ve been in the trade market for a point guard — are probing a possible deal too, sources said.
