But even if the Lakers determine the locker room chemistry can sustain the hits it took from the Irving trade drama, Russell Westbrook’s $47.1 million contract is its own issue. Even before this trade happened, execs I talked to on my road trip this past week, who were given anonymity so they could speak freely, were openly wondering if adding Irving could create a last-straw type situation that ends up pushing Dončić to seek the exits … much as happened with James Harden in Brooklyn. “Now for Brooklyn, they want to get back to work,” said Adrian Wojnarowski on Sunday. “They got the three picks they got in this trade, they have a future Philadelphia first round pick. They’ll be aggressive with those picks between now and Thursday’s trade deadline to try to get more help around Kevin Durant. “Quite honestly, this is an organization that wants Kevin Durant to stay committed. Stay the course with this reshaping of this roster. They’re going to continue between now and Thursday to do that.”

League sources say that Irving has not been promised a new contract by the Mavericks, who clearly want to see how the rest of the season goes for their new Luka Dončić/Irving backcourt before making a long-term commitment to a player who missed almost as many games as he played in three-and-a-half seasons as a Net.

The Nets, rather than trading with Phoenix or the Lakers, ultimately came away with the two Mavericks they wanted most and a better win-now duo than L.A. could offer: Dinwiddie and Finney-Smith. The Nets also succeeded, as one source close to the process put it, in meeting one of the presumed objectives held by team owner Joe Tsai by sending Irving somewhere other than the Lakers — his preferred destination.

League sources say the Clippers offered Luke Kennard, Terance Mann, one future first, and two first-round pick swaps. An additional salary would’ve been required to complete the trade, but that was the gist of it.
