Jason Beede: Speaking with reporters after defeating Japan, 81-63, in their first FIBA World Cup Group E game, Germany coach Gordie Herbert said this about #Magic’s Franz Wagner: “Franz, looks like a slight sprained ankle. We’ll know more after an MRI.” Wagner finished with 10 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists in 26 minutes but exited the game with 4:55 remaining when he rolled his left ankle. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Canada steamroll France in World Cup opener

Canada parlayed a monster 27 points, 13 rebounds, and six assists from star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander en route to a dominating 95-65 victory over Rudy Gobert and powerhouse France on Friday. Leading by just three at the break, Canada won the second half by a 27-point margin, putting the game completely out of reach in its World Cup opener versus their Group H foe.

Jordan Clarkson fouled out when it mattered most and Gilas Pilipinas bowed to Dominican Republic, 87-81, in its FIBA World Cup opener before a record crowd at the Philippine Arena on Friday, August 25. The NBA star finished with all-around numbers with 28 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists, and 2 steals but got the boot with 3:30 minutes left as majority of the 38,115 fans – a World Cup mark – returned home in disappointment.

Patrick Mills, Australia dominate Finland 98-72

The long-awaited 2023 FIBA World Cup began, and what was supposed to be one of the most exciting games at the start, Australia made it a pretty one-sided affair, crushing Finland 98-72 on the opening day of the competition in Okinawa. Luka Doncic signs contract extension with Jordan Brand through 2029

Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic has signed a contract extension with Jordan Brand, according to industry sources. 

The deal, sources say, will continue Doncic’s run as a leading face for the shoe powerhouse through 2029. The Slovenian has achieved All-Star and All-NBA status in each of the past four seasons with the Mavericks and became Jordan Brand’s first European born-and-raised signature athlete in 2019.

On Thursday, Edwards said Kerr had called him before the start of camp and “he was telling me about coming off the bench. “I mean, of course I wasn’t cool with it,” Edwards said. “If that’s what it takes, I mean, I am willing to do it, but nah, I’m never cool with that. … He said Dwyane Wade came off the bench when Kobe played. I was like, all right, we don’t have a Kobe, but all right. But it was cool.”
