Nicolas Batum was among them. In his return to the international basketball after the 2021 Olympic Games for the last World Cup of his career, the captain of France admitted he felt his “biggest disappointment” with the national team. “I’ve never been ashamed with this jersey but this is the first time I’m ashamed,” Batum said in the post-game presser. “I’m scared to go home because we let a lot of people down. France has been eliminated from the FIBA World Cup in the group stages after Latvia beat them 88-86 in Game 2.

Finland had a gargantuan lead in the second half but it didn’t matter for Japan. They won the fourth quarter by 18 points and eliminated Lauri Markkanen’s team from FIBA World Cup title contention 98-88 (22-15, 14-31, 27-27, 35-15).

August and September are for hoops, at least in FIBA competitions. The World Cup is in full swing, showcasing a wealth of talent. As usual, we’re using Global Rating to identify the tournament’s top players.

Three host countries, 32 national teams, 384 players. The 2023 FIBA World Cup started on August 25 and has already given us plenty of great performances. To follow every single player in the tournament, we rank all of them per team using our own Global Rating metric.

Olgun Uluc: Franz Wagner is out for tonight’s Australian Boomers vs Germany game, he told ESPN. Wagner suffered a left ankle injury in the 4th quarter of Germany’s FIBA World Cup opener vs Japan.

The German Basketball Federation initially said Wagner was ‘day-to-day’, before the team’s doctor gave more of an update. “We were able to rule out serious injuries,” Germany’s team doctor, Oliver Putz, said on Saturday. “Nothing is broken, torn, or anything like this; things that would end the FIBA World Cup for him. Franz feels better this morning than yesterday. We did another MRI this morning. But, the problem is that we don’t have the imaging yet, so we can’t say exactly what’s hurt yet.”
