Anthony Edwards flat out makes up nickname for teammate Mike Conley

0

Alan Horton: Postgame I asked Mike Conley about Ant’s “Bite Bite” nickname for him… “I swear he made it up on the spot. I’ve never heard him call me that before. Ever.” “Is the nickname gonna stick?” “Yeah, I’m a little worried. I don’t want it to at all [laughing] but it is what it is.”

I’m the moment of truth, Anthony Edwards locked eyes with Jayson Tatum and then locked his jaw. The offensive flurry in OT was something to behold. But the defense from Ant, Gobert and Jaden McDaniels is what sets these Wolves apart. 👇 theathletic.com/5037707/2023/1…8:59 AM

More on this storyline

In the first half Wednesday, he looked more like a vintage Towns on that end of the floor. He faced single coverage in the post, something that rarely used to happen for him, and he took advantage on multiple occasions to help the Wolves build their big lead. He was physical without committing offensive fouls. “It’s weird. It’s different,” Towns said of the single coverage. “But I’m blessed to have guys like Ant, Rudy, Mike. My teammates are amazing and super talented and we have a deep locker room here. It feels good to know it can be any one of our nights.” -via Minneapolis Star-Tribune / November 2, 2023
For a night, it didn’t, and the Wolves handed the defending champion Denver Nuggets their first loss of the season with a 110-89 victory. There was a key difference Wednesday that wasn’t present Monday. When things got hairy, as they did for a few moments in the third quarter, the Wolves ran their offense through Mike Conley, who was feeling much better after a bout of food poisoning in Atlanta. Even as Denver started making a run, the Nuggets never got closer than 14 points in the third quarter. Conley, or “Bite Bite” as Anthony Edwards refers to him, scored 10 of his 17 points then. “He look like he’s ready to bite something,” Edwards said when asked why he calls Conley that. “Bite bite came through big tonight.” -via Minneapolis Star-Tribune / November 2, 2023
The Wolves also limited Jokic to three assists and cut down his ability to hurt them that way. “I’ve been a part of those [game] plans where you say let [Jokic] score, or let him be a facilitator and they both don’t work,” Conley said. “It’s really just compete and play hard. Try to make it a tough night on them. Everybody who was out there did a great job.” Denver shot just 40% for the game and coach Michael Malone sent the reserves out to play the final 6 minutes, 21 seconds. Towns and Edwards (24 points) helped the Wolves build a 22-point lead but took a back seat offensively in the third to let Conley run the show. -via Minneapolis Star-Tribune / November 2, 2023
Shams Charania: Timberwolves’ Rudy Gobert sits down with @Stadium: “People being mad at me a year later. Seeing how much the Jazz got in exchange of me, it makes you feel you’re doing something right.” On Karl-Anthony Towns partnership, challenge to Anthony Edwards, darkness retreat, much more: -via Twitter @ShamsCharania / November 7, 2023
Anthony Edwards when asked about accepting the challenge of guarding Jayson Tatum: “He got the stop on me at the end of the game. And he was talkin smack at the jump ball at overtime. And I told him, ‘I’m comin again’. Luckily, he called me up for an iso and tried to iso me, and I’m like, ‘I play defense, I just got five fouls’. So I had to show him I could play defense. But he’s a great player, one of the best players in the league, for sure.” Here’s that possession, Ant v. Tatum… pic.twitter.com/lWUeR41HDm -via Twitter @DaneMooreNBA / November 7, 2023
Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton recently told The Athletic he believed he and Minnesota’s Anthony Edwards, two of the stars from the American team this past summer, feel they deserve to go to the Olympics. “That conversation is coming over the next couple of months,” Kerr said. “We’d like to have a roster set sooner rather than later. We don’t have a date, but, you know, obviously, we don’t want to leave guys in limbo. -via The Athletic / November 6, 2023
