Grainger had excellent delivery and used the ball well but wasn't a particularly good defender, particularly one-on-one, imo, he got roasted quite a bit and was a bit rash.
In terms of being hard, he's one of these types that seems to think being hard is deliberately trying to break someones leg, which to me, is just pure cowardice and not hard at all, although I guess it does fit with the word 'nasty' as I think he could be quite spiteful.
