San Francisco finally gets its own autonomous ride-hailing service — sort of

The Verge

It’s always been a bit weird that San Francisco, the cradle of autonomous research, has been missing from the list of cities that boast their own self-driving ride-hailing services. Autonomous cars are prowling the streets of cities like Pittsburgh, Phoenix, and Singapore — and soon enough Boston — offering rides to ordinary people through services like Uber, NuTonomy, and Waymo. And poor San Francisco has been left out of the mix — until now.

The Verge

Game of Thrones has already broken its own record for most-watched episode, after just setting a new one with the season 7 premiere a few weeks ago. According to HBO, 10.2 million viewers tuned in for season 7, episode 4, “The Spoils of War,” on Sunday night, beating out the 10.1 million who showed up for episode 1, “Dragonstone.” That number doesn’t include viewers who watched online or through an HBO app, which will almost certainly push that number even higher.

The Verge

Razer’s suite of PC gaming accessories is instantly recognizable for its acid-green-and-black color scheme. And while more recent products have taken advantage of the company’s color-changing Chroma system that lets you switch up the glowing neon green for other colors, you’ve still been stuck with the black finish.

This year’s Jewish center bomb threats were part of a dark web threat-for-hire business

The Verge

Earlier this year, a string of bomb threats targeted more than 100 Jewish centers, causing daily chaos for local organizations and raising new concerns about anti-Semitic violence in the US. The spree came to an end when police arrested 19-year-old Israeli citizen Michael Kadar in connection with the threats, overcoming various anonymity measures to trace the calls. But new evidence suggests Kadar may have been making the calls on behalf of a third party, as part of a larger bomb-threat-for-hire business operating on the dark web. Читать дальше...

Facebook shuts down Lifestage, its teen-focused Snapchat clone

The Verge

Lifestage, one of Facebook’s more recent attempts to get Snapchat-obsessed teens to use Facebook’s services instead, has now been shut down, as reported by Business Insider. If you’re not familiar with Lifestage, I don’t entirely blame you, given that the app’s big hook was that only users aged 21 or younger could sign on in the first place.

Anchor can now transform podcasts into shareable videos

The Verge

Here’s a small but very real problem that podcast creators run into: Once an episode is published, the creator probably wants to promote it. There’s no easy way let their followers listen to an interesting snippet of the podcast from right inside of most social apps.

The Verge

A teenage girl has created a 3D-printed lens that, when fitted onto a smartphone and used with an app, can give a preliminary diagnosis for people with diabetic retinopathy, reports IEEE Spectrum. Diabetic retinopathy is the most common cause of vision loss for those who suffer from diabetes, and diagnosis of the disease is usually done via a two-hour exam, which also requires a specialized camera to take a photo of the retina. Sixteen-year-old Kavya Kopparapu, along with her team, trained an... Читать дальше...

Intel’s new Ruler SSDs could pack one petabyte of data in a single server rack

Intel’s new enterprise SSDs are changing that with the company’s new “Ruler” design, which is designed to optimize storage density while also reducing the amount of power and cooling, via Techgage.
