I agree that Shorrocks did well but not that Smithies didn’t. In those early stages, when the game was full throttle, I thought Smithies took it to them on both sides of the ball. Asiata is an experienced NRL player and him snd Smithies had a really good early battle. It’s all about balance for me. It felt like we found a nice balance on Thursday, with the likes of Byrne, Powell and Smithies starting and Havard, O’Neill and Shorrocks coming on as replacements. They opened us up a bit... Austin has given a few away for high tackles, a few times he has shot out the line aggressively and got the tackle wrong, fair play to him as a half back trying to make a difference in defence.
Think that's a bit unfair on O'Connor, he is often the on leading the line in defence.
My goal was not to bag O’Connor or Smith, I like them both but just to point out that these simplistic statistics are not all RL is about.
There are three ways of looking at how to grow the sport.
There is the IMG commercial model, which is create an exciting and vibrant top-flight, with lots of fans and engagement, with millionaire owners and sponsorship and TV money. The extra interest in the game because of the vibrant top flight, will spread the game and increase interest, with a spin-off of more grassroots involvements.
This first option is aimed at the top teams in super league and growing the game.
a) Score and Winning team: Catalans 18 v 36 Warrington b) First try (Wire player): Currie c) Time of first try: 12 mins d) Last try (any team, player not time): Davies e) Kicks over the sticks (combined): 9 f) Attendance (500 margin) 9300
g) Castleford v Wakefield Wakefield by 12 Hull FC v Hull KR Hull KR by 12 Wigan v St Helens St Helens by 10 Leigh v Salford Leigh by 10 Leeds v Huddersfield Leeds by 8

With the rivals round beginning tomorrow night in West Yorkshire with the Trinity taking on the Tigers at the Jungle a colleague and myself had a discussion regarding the best grounds in Superleague for atmosphere.
Top 3
1.Sewell Group Craven Park. Hull 2. The Mend-A-Hose Jungle. Castleford 3 Leigh Sports Village. Leigh
Bottom 3
1. The John Smiths Stadium. Huddersfield 2. MKM Stadium. Hull 3. AJ Bell Stadium. Salford
Not thinking about relegation too deeply just yet but it can also be a new opportunity for the club, as all playing contracts are null and void and we can start again. The IMG points lost for say having a 9th placed average finish to say a 12th placed one following relegaton isnt that much either. The league finishes will drag down our score even if we stay up.
The big question would be the ground rent and how many of our costs are fixed and how many only apply if crowds are above a certain level. Читать дальше...
David Fusitu'a (£££) - Simply not value for money - Release. Blake Austin (££) - Perhaps keep. Aidan Sezer (£££) - See Fusitu'a. James Bentley (££) - Retain. Zane Tetevano (£££) - See Fusitu'a and Sezer. Sam Walters (£) - Retain. James Donaldson (£) - Release. Liam Tindall (£) - I'm not a fan and would release. Expect he will be retained though. Jack Sinfield (£) - Retain.
I've forgotten. Does Talent and Perfornance Pathway include the academy?
I don’t know PT, I don’t think JM mentioned that part when he discussed the IMG criteria at last night’s shareholders meeting. Today’s statement by IMG doesn’t specify Academy, but isn’t the lack of Academy grading the reason most clubs asked for the criteria to be reviewed.
I’ve just noticed this Tweet by the Game Caller, I’m not sure if the review was about minimum standards... Читать дальше...
He's going great for us. I think he's a player that really needs to be in a highly professional set up to get the best out of him and he has that right now.
I was against his signing after seeing him balloon at Leeds but he's been a revelation really and given the injury issues with Percy and Hoppa last year (and this!) we would have been in a tough spot without him.
Was Leeds not a highly professional setup? Interested to know where theirs and Saints setups differ. Читать дальше...
Overall I have to agree with your last sentence ' not bad but not good enough to justify the expense'.
Hughes probably saw the move to PL as a easy way to tick off some IMG scoring criteria but he has failed to address other important areas which required work.
Unclear to me how the amended critera announced today might affect our scoring.
We do. We also need Atoni to pull his finger out, for me he’s been the biggest disappointment of all. He’s been the epitome of that classic line ‘Looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane” and it’s time for him to step it up.
Yes he certainly does need to show some aggression tomorrow. I would have him coming off the bench after 20 minutes. He’s not a starting prop imo so may go better off the bench.
We really need the pack to step up and get us into positions to score points. Читать дальше...
So it turns out that he is free to negotiate contracts for 2024 and could be back in SL without Leeds getting any financial recompense even though he was originaly contracted till the end of '24
The Sleeve will not have let him go without some kind of Gentlemen's agreement with GC/Holbrook.
